Stella Weinert, Executive Director

Stella Weinert, Executive Director

An elementary school teacher with School District 64 for 25 years, Stella is Salt Spring Literacy’s Executive Director. She was also the district’s aboriginal education coordinator and a faculty associate at UBC where she led seminars and supervised student teachers. She has also provided aboriginal programs and resources to district teachers, worked with a variety of assessment programs and led writing workshops for the district. Stella has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and a Master of Arts, also in Education.

Keiko Taylor, Children’s Coordinator

Keiko has lived on Salt Spring Island for approximately 40 years and still has a decade or so to go before she can legitimately call herself an islander. During that time, she has worked as a server, pharmacy assistant, teacher, and principal. She expresses herself through art and writing – most notably pencil drawings and haiku.

Keiko has been an educator with a special interest in literacy throughout her career. She retired four years ago after 30 years as a teacher and principal in School District #64. She is certified to teach Secondary English and History but has been lucky to have had an opportunity to teach all grades in her career. Keiko realized early on that reading effectively and communicating deeply are integral to a person’s success both in school and in life.

The opportunity to be able to support the children in her district in an area that is close to her heart is one that Keiko is grateful for.
