Become a Volunteer
Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. We welcome everyone’s contribution in a variety of areas.
Whatever your skills, whatever your experience, we would love to have you join our team.
Adult Tutoring
Our free adult literacy tutoring program depends on a network of volunteer tutors who are willing to devote time on a regular basis to help learners facing challenges with literacy. This could be with reading, writing, math, learning English, or working on coursework. Our volunteer tutors are trained and supported by a Program Coordinator. Once trained, they are carefully matched with a learner. Specific learning goals are identified and agreed upon. The tutor and learner work closely on a regular basis to achieve these goals.
An interview is required for all potential tutors, plus a criminal record check. After completing an orientation, tutors will be matched with an adult learner based on the tutors’ preferences.
We also provide ongoing professional development for all tutors, as well as opportunities to connect with other tutors.

One-To-One Reading
Our One-To-One Reading program sends volunteer tutors into local elementary schools twice a year in October and February for 12-week support sessions for students. Training and a handbook is provided.
Tutors volunteer once a week to listen to students read and gently coach them on reading strategies. Sessions are 1 hour long. Other tutors volunteer to be “sub” tutors, going in when regular volunteers are away.
This year tutoring will take place by Zoom using an online children’s library. Training provided- it’s easier than you may think!
